Elementary School Guidance Program
The Four Basic Themes of the Elementary School counseling Program
  • Teaching students to take responsibility for their actions
  • The concept of mutual respect (respect for self and others).
  • Training in basic life management skills
  • (communication, decision making, problem solving, conflict resolution)
  • The belief that students who feel good about themselves and have positive
  • relationships with others are more successful both in and out of school.

    The Elementary School Guidance Program is delivered in six ways:
  • Classroom Guidance Lessons 
  • Small Group Guidance
  • Counseling Individual Students
  • Consustation and collaboration with teachers, parents, and administrators.
  • Training and supervision of peer helpers
  • Parenting classes

  • Classroom Guidance Lessons
    Classroom guidance lessons are scheduled so that each class in grades one through five has one lesson every two cycles. The lessons are scheduled for 30 minutes. Each class has14 lessons during the school year. Kindergarten classes meet every cycle for 15 minutes.
    Kindergarten and Grade One work on materials presented from the following units:
  • Making Conversation
  • Expressing One's self
  • Playing with Peers
  • Communicating Feelings
  • Cooperating with Peers
  • Responding to Agrgession and Conflict
  • Grades Two, Three, and Four work on materials from these units:
  • Self-Acceptance
  • Problem Solving
  • Decision Making
  • Feelings
  • Beliefs and Behaviors
  • Interpersonal Relationships
  • Grade Five works primarily on material from the Here's Looking At You 2000 program for drug prevention. The guidance counselor presents the following units:
  • Positive Self-Talk
  • Refusal Skills
  • Decision-Making Skills
  • Friendship Skills
  • Stress Reduction
